I wonder who chose that word initially to term the graduation from their schooling life to that of an adult about to enter the workforce? It really is a great word if you think about it- commencement. The start of something new, not the end.

During the last few months, my wife and I have bit a bit melancholy about this date. It seems like just yesterday our little boy was running around in my boots and learning how to walk and talk. And now, he is a strapping young man, taller than me, and quite a good example of a fine human being if I do say so myself.

But we still wonder if we did the right thing. Did we teach him to make the right decisions? Did we teach him to think of others? Did we teach him to honor his family, friends and God? Did we equip him with the right tools to be a successful husband and father? Perhaps only time will tell.

We are not experts by any stretch of the imagination. Rather, we are God-fearing people who are dedicated to the 3 most important things (we think) in life: God, Family and country. For us, there is no family without God, and we cannot imagine living without our faith let alone raising a family in this world so fraught with evil. The family and it’s governance in is chronicled in the Bible. I often joked when I was younger that we (or babies) don’t come with an owner’s manual. How wrong I was!

The Holy Bible has so many life lessons in being a son or daughter, father or mother, a law abiding citizen, yet so many people allows these fundamentals to escape them. The same book also speaks to being a good citizen- to obey laws and when necessary, defending your community or nation. This responsibility has grave responsibilities and is what makes veterans so special in our house. The service of others is perhaps the greatest gift God has given us for when we do serve others, we are doing so out of obedience to Him and love of others. And there are countless servants- the teachers we learned from, the civil servants of our towns who kept us safe or healthy, the people of God with whom we fellowship in church. Each plays an important role in our cultural experience.

I could say we did our “best”, but as long as there was one more lesson, one more question I could have imparted upon him, spent one more minute with him, then I did not do my best. As far as I am concerned, there is almost always just one more thing we can do in our professional or personal lives yet we continually come up short because we are more comfortable with coming up short.

Fortunately, as I opened, he is simply beginning something new. He is not leaving us to never be seen or heard from again. We will still be there when he needs us, even if he doesn’t think he does, or if he is to make a mistake.

We are very proud of him- he learned many tough lessons, particularly this past year, but his talent is perhaps where my greatest failure is realized. He has a penchant for playing video games as many his age do, and consequently was not quite as dedicated to his studies as his contemporaries. What is frustrating is he has the ability to have done better based on his SAT score without really preparing for it and having taken it with a broken nose from a wrestling match that weekend. How much better could he have been? He is one of the sharpest young men I know, having more on the ball than some “adults” I know. That comes from his intensity I should think. Perhaps I should have been still firmer in my expectations for him. I do hope I did not do him a disservice.

All I know is I really wanted to be a different parent to my children than my parents were to me, and to that end, I am confident I have thus far been very successful.

I hope not only Michael but all his contemporaries, from all over the world, are open to experiencing life through the eyes of a Christian eye, are ready for the challenges ahead of them in this trying period of our existence, and they cultivate others along the way. I pray Michael will take the lessons we gave him and apply them and emerge the leader I believe he is. But once again, only time will tell, and it will, I pray, reveal to him what his reason for being is.

Why do we fear a challenge?

A sort of follow up to my March article on Standing up to Challenges, I began wondering on my way home this evening why we shy away from challenges. I was listening to the radio decompressing before I got home and Taylor Swift's A Love Story was playing. In one verse she says "Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel; This love is difficult but it is real", and it got me to thinking how many people I know who are separated or divorced. How many people I know who have never faced their potential and chased their dreams. Why is that?

We live in the greatest country in the world. Freedom and liberty enable us to be ANYTHING we want to be, yet remarkably few take advantage of us. I see many immigrants in the area living the American dream. They work extremely hard, many have their own business and home. They chase the dream with a vengeance, and hang on to it.

When I was separating from the service after a short stint, I was faced with one of the greatest challenges of my life. All my life all I had ever wanted was to serve my country as an officer in the military for a career. It is all I thought of. And when I was faced with a difficult decision to separate and provide for my wife and 2 children, the task was quite daunting at the beginning of the journey.

Several colleagues and I went to a recruiter's informational meeting to see what options we had available. He was strong, convicted and very good at what he does. He suggested we read his book on PCS'ing to Corporate America. After the meeting, I conferred with a couple of friends and wondered about my meeting with him the following afternoon. "Don't worry" they said- "just go". The decision to go or postpone weighed heavily on my mind.

The next morning I phoned the recruiter and asked for an appointment on his next visit in a couple of months. He of course thanked me for my courtesy, and we went on with our day.

The next day I asked my buddies how the interview with the recruiter went. I heard all kinds of excuses: "He was arrogant", "He was an &**hole", "A jerk" etc. Predictably, everyone with these comments was not accepted by him to be a candidate for his recruiting agency.

Coincidence? I think not. You see, Roger only accepted on average 12% of the applicants. Not because they were extraordinarily talented, but because they were committed to the career change and were taking it very seriously. They demonstrated this commitment by reading his book and many others, and learning how little they knew about themselves and how to interview. Under Roger's leadership we became experts of ourselves and rose to the challenge. His course was rigorous and demanding, but deep inside my heart I knew by following his advice and direction and dedicating myself to his plan everything was going to be alright, and that is how I was able to lead my family during one of the most stressful periods of our lives.

My friends took the easy way out. They chose not to try to learn about themselves, and if they don't know themselves, how can they convey their best qualities to a prospective employer and land the big job? They can't.

When I landed my job with a cutting edge medical company selling devices to surgeons, my friends called me "lucky". That infuriated me.
God had given me a path, just like them, but unlike them, I chose the path less traveled and succeeded where they had failed. I suppose it is easier to point the finger at someone else and call it luck, but it was highly offensive nonetheless, and I am not one to get worked up about stuff like that.

Along the same lines, many people accuse my wife and me of being lucky for the relationship we have. We have been together since we were 16, and have never been with anyone else. What we have IS special, and I think we are indeed blessed to have each other (though I am DEFINITELY getting the better part of the bargain!), but the marriage thing has not always been a bed of roses. We have had ups and downs. We have fought. We have disagreed about things, but we have worked them all out. We trust each other implicitly, knowing the other would never do anything to harm what we have.

This is rare, I know.

But the point is the work and the investments we make into our relationship. While I am not always a teddy bear to be around, I do my best to leave my frustrations at work (or wherever they come from) and not take them out on the family. I am not always successful, but I try. My wife loves me for who I am, and she realizes the grumpy guy is NOT who I am. She looks past this inadequacy. How she put up with me when I was in the service and much more volatile is a mystery to me. (I told you I was getting the best bargain here)

Nothing worthwhile is free or easy, and if it is, it is most definitely not worth much to you.

People use all kinds of things to fill a void in their lives- shopping, home decor, cars, vacations, clothes, food, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, sex. The list goes on and on. Each of these "addictions" as many are becoming known are nothing more than the human spirit, seeking more pleasure, being allowed to spiral out of control by someone not working to improve themselves. And if they are not willing to improve themselves for their own benefit, what chance does their spouse have of motivating them?

The bottom line: We fear a challenge because it makes us uncomfortable, we feel we have too much at risk or don't see enough payoff for the challenge. When we try to tie a monetary value to everything in our life, we devalue that which is most sacred- the love of our Father, our family and our neighbors. When we take our eye off the ball and focus on the material things in our lives, we lose sight of the greatest commandment and subsequently true joy. We Americans feel if we can have this vacation, raise, promotion, car or house we will truly be happy. Then, there is one MORE thing we want, then another. When does it stop? Never.

Truthfully, are you really happier today with all you material possessions or were you happier when you were a simple child and found wonder and joy in most things? Sadly, most of us will answer no. We have supplanted a simple life with gadgets and stress trying to procure more and more stuff we will leave behind when we die.

Trust me on this one- take a trip somewhere away from the advertising that surrounds us today. Turn off the t.v., radio and Internet and spend a couple of days away from it all and see what you start to think about. You may find yourself looking at yourself and wondering how to change yourself for the better or to have a closer relationship with God. If not, worst case, you end up with a relaxing few days away from the constant pressure of in your face marketing.

Go ahead and try it- I dare you!

Do you get personal?

Friday morning on Fox News was a news story that at first blush disturbed me somewhat. The teaser stated a Texas church was giving away a car on Easter Sunday. That got my attention!

When the show returned after the break, the anchors introduced Pastor Bill Cornelius of Bay Area Fellowship from the Corpus Christi area network of churches. They have several campuses in South Texas, and each one will be drawing names for a car, laptops, big screen t.v.s and more in what they call The Ultimate Giveaway. Here is the description from their home page:

"YOU are the next winner of The Ultimate Giveaway! That's right...With nearly $1 MILLION in prizes and giveaways, this Easter, everyone will win something at Bay Area Fellowship! And, wait...that's not all. Each service we're giving awayFREE FLATSCREENS, LAPTOPS...and CARS!!! Be here beginning April 1 (and...no, this is no April Fool's joke). This is the real deal! No tricks, strings or fine print! Show up and let Bay Area Fellowship bless YOU this Easter!"

This was of great interest to the anchors so they asked Pastor Bill what was up- what are you thinking here?

Bill told them he is copying a friend from Minnesota and using the Ultimate Giveaway as a means to reach those who ordinarily would not attend church, even on Easter Sunday. He feels if he has JUST ONE chance to introduce someone to the idea of meeting Jesus and developing a personal relationship with Him, the he has been successful. The video is here on the homepage.

I immediately saw the potential there with this publicity stunt, and apparently it has been successful; Pastor Bill having led some 300 people last year to a personal relationship with Christ when He was accepted as their Savior. Hence the title "The Ultimate Giveaway" for the gift of eternal life is the greatest gift anyone can receive.

How great is that?

But it is a fine line between using this stunt as an effective recruiting tool and turning the temple into a commercialized God-free zone. A fine line indeed.

As I drove to work, I started to remember the wonder when I was exposed to a personal relationship concept with Rene Cardiff and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in high school when I was 14. I was already a believer but I was not a BELIEVER.

Rene was our trainer in high school, and was always one of the coolest guys around. He was a little older than us (at the time I think he was in his late 20's) and was very happily married to his wife Mary. Several of us would hang out in his office during lunch and talk several days a week. He never seemed to mind it. In fact, he seemed to revel in it, and now I know why.

I remember thinking to myself how great Rene was- how friendly and supportive. He had it all, and I subconsciously wondered what I needed to get the same joy of life he had. He invited me to attend the next FCA event and I did. Of course every one there was someone I knew, most of them from the football and baseball teams I was on so the comfort level was there immediately.

Over the next few months, I was impressed with the scriptural knowledge Rene had for a lay person, but I began to feel differently about my relation with Christ. I began to take on a different belief or perspective of Christianity. A paradigm had taken place in my life.

As I was attending Sunday School in church, I was told how difficult the Bible is to read because it is full of hyperbole and analogies. You must be well-read in ancient studies and languages to fully interpret the Bible. And it made sense if you knew no better. What I learned was the Bible is literal and fairly clear. The analogies take place when Jesus was trying to explain to others what He was all about (and many STILL didn't get it) and others were used when the author was trying to explain a concept (like John in Revelation talking about the iron grasshoppers that spit fire, which are of course helicopters today).

To illustrate this point, I offer to you my analogy. The Bible is basically our Father's word to us. His rules, if you will. Given He loves us infinitely more than we love our own children or our parents loved us, and given most of us had a clear understanding of what was expected of us by our own parents, how likely is it God the Father would not provide the same to us? Clear, defined roles, rules and guidelines? Boundaries are things man has sought from the beginning for our own understanding. Boundaries on land, law, relationships etc. Infants continually push the envelope as they develop and explore their own world and influence therein.

So I ask again, how likely is God to have said my children are wise enough to understand my Word since I did not speak clearly?

Of course the Bible is clear. It is meant to be our Daily Bread- the conduit to develop a personal relationship with Christ and the Father. This is something I have begun to take for granted in the sense I often forget not everyone knows what I know- that Jesus wants to commune with me and that God is a jealous God. He wants His children to be close and to have a close walk with Him.

Is that too much to ask? I don't think so- especially when you consider what we are celebrating this weekend. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He is risen. Rejoice in the good news and share it with others.

Are you a model for your family to follow to Christ?

Continuing from my last post, during our conversation, Gene mentioned his children had indicated they did not want to go to church. He had taken them for the first 6 months and said that was all they had to do. After that it would be up to them to attend. He was now concerned they did not WANT to go to church any longer.

What immediately occurred to me was perhaps they did not see a substantial change in his persona or how he behaved as the head of the house. There is little doubt God has used many people with various backgrounds as new followers to be the testimony for Him in their circles of friend. When there is a substantial change in the behavior and beliefs of someone who may have been an alcoholic or perhaps into drugs and then a sudden shift in their lives takes them away from that, most people want to know WHAT changed them. These are some of the most powerful testimonies for Christ- the stark contrast from what we are accustomed to from that person to an upstanding person and a leader now. It will either prompt someone to ask what is going on and how do I get that or to condemn the person as being a fake and saying "I know your history."

Whatever the outcome, there are needless to say millions of examples of these amazing transformations. Consider the story of Saul of Tarsus who became the Apostle Paul. Saul was responsible the imprisonment and death of many Christians, and was feared, yet God used him mightily as an Apostle and as an author of much of the New Testament.

So here we were, having a discussion, one father to another, and I so desperately wanted to "pounce" and tell him what I thought.

Notice what I wrote there? TELL HIM WHAT I THOUGHT? That is the LAST thing I should have done. How could that have been conveyed other than a sanctimonious arrogant jerk thinking I am better than him.

Perhaps the better tact is to use examples of Paul and others in later conversations and discuss how those dramatic changes of heart have led many to Christ, or to be able to quote scripture like James 1:19,20 - Be slow to wrath, because the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Anger is often a parent's Achilles's heel. With the stresses we face every day at work, we can sometimes lash out and hurt those we love most.

Perhaps if Gene had been doing this at home and then suddenly changed, I think his kids would be more inclined to follow him to church.

Is that fair of me to insinuate or presume to know what kind of parent he is? No, but I have picked up tidbits here and there and can make an assumption of how he might behave at home, and when taken in context with his concerns about his kids' not wanting to go to church, it makes sense.

The only problem- I am JUDGING him, which is very dangerous. Until we know all the facts, have walked in his steps, we are not able to accurately understand his motivations and therefore cannot and should not judge. This is best left to God and His infinite wisdom to condone/condemn us for our actions.

Now imagine if I had made the comment about his not changing enough at home to make his children want to go to church and he needs to look at himself when he is actually a loving and caring father his sons would do anything for?

That is the danger of presuming to know what is in the heart of your friend and being able to tell them how to live their lives when you are not as perfect as you think you are which I wrote about earlier in Are Your Glasses Clean?. I would have stepped right into the one trap so many Christians are guilty of doing, or at least are perceived to do to non believers. And whether it is true or not, perception IS reality.

Prayer is the only answer for a situation like this unless you are clergy and they are seeking your advice. For the layperson, we must support and pray for Divine wisdom to be given to Gene in his situation which is what I would want if I was in his position: a friend, not a friend judging me.

Planting the seed...

The other day I had the chance to meet with a friend one evening. He called and said his wife was having a shower or something of the sort at their home so he needed to get out for a while. We met at a neighborhood cigar store and sat outside in the pleasant Texas evening enjoying the sunset and the relaxation of a nice cigar and great fellowship.

Gene and I had worked together previously at a dealership where we met. I took an instant liking to him despite many differences in our lives, but perhaps because of parallel ideals. He has 3 children, is a veteran, and has very similar political views. He is also well-read and a bit of an intellect for someone who has not completed a degree of advanced study(I hope that does not sound arrogant or elitist, it is not intended to).

We had many passionate discussions about American history, current affairs and bringing up a family, though when we turned to religion, Gene had no use for organized religion. He was against it based on the experience he has had in the past with what he felt pastors being more about the offering than the message. Gene had not attended church as a child, a few times in the Navy, but really was not what I would call a religious man, though he did believe in God and Jesus Christ. Like many newcomers to the faith, or perhaps more to his point, casual Christians who are not "all in" in their faith, Gene had several issues with trying to resolve real life with what the Bible says. Thus, he had it set in his head he didn't need to go to church.

I shared with him the need to commune with others of similar belief, and that "religion" is man-made. By that I mean religion is faith combined with rituals we may find comfort in to augment our church-going experience. The need to commune with others is very real. We need to be there for others in their moment of need just as we need them in our time of need. If we only went to church when WE felt the need to be lifted up, no one would be there when things were going smoothly and everyone there would be having difficult times. It is much easier to be a positive when things are going your way.

I suggested perhaps they needed to find a more scriptural-based church to meet his needs. I didn't try to push too hard because I knew I would become one of "those" who had alienated Gene all along to worshiping our God in church.

Not long after that, Gene suggested we meet Sunday after church with the fam to fellowship. It was great. I saw a new gleam in his eyes and he was quick to point out some of the lessons they had learned in the sermon and how he felt it might apply to him.

Now, nearly two years after that initial conversation, Gene and his family are now regularly attending a church he loves. He says every sermon seems to be aimed right at him and his pastor is fearless, and is willing to tackle contemporary issues like teen-age promiscuity, acting like a Christian. These are very convicting sermons. We have a number of "mega-churches" in our are of Dallas here. Some with congregations of over 20,000 people. We have watched some of the sermons on t.v. and have not impressed with the message too much. It seems very "watered down" or too easy-going. They seem more concerned with getting people in the doors and not offending them than truly giving a message Jesus would be proud of.

I ramble. The point of this post is to stress when you are witnessing for Christ, the most important thing to bear in mind is to be a friend first, and understand if you have the chance to witness and try to win someone to Christ, you may not be able to completely win them all by yourself, especially in one discussion. You are planting the seed. Someone else will water it. Someone else will cultivate it. Someone else will harvest that seed. Each step is critical in His work, and the ultimate glory be to Him in the highest, regardless of what role YOU had! You will still be responsible for the actions/inactions you take with those around you as you walk in His way.

Did those conversations make a difference in Gene's life? I would say so, but so did his interaction with my wife and children, seeing how we are an integrated family with a faithful servant's heart (I hope!) and being disciples of Christ, and so did his interactions with other Christian friends. Ultimately, it was not what I said, but what the Holy Spirit said THROUGH

me and others. People from my friend Jipu's ministry Win Bangladesh handing out tracts for Christ

Plant that seed today- you never know how large that vine will grow and how much fruit it will bear for the Kingdom!

Standing up to Challenges

Every day, or most every day at least, we are faced with challenges. Personal, professional, environmental, financial, familial, health, the list is quite daunting if you think about it. Yet we persevere for the most part and overcome obstacles every day of our lives to do what we need to do to survive or be happy.

But every once in a while, along comes a challenge we seem to shrink from. We lose our determination, our faith to see it through, and sometimes even the direction to do so. At times the challenge can seem so overwhelming you may throw up your hands and retreat in fear. What to do?

Can you think of a serious challenge you were faced with? What did you do when you faced a situation you did not think you could face and overcome? How serious was it? Some are life-threatening. Others may be harmful to your profession or health.

There are many instances in which the Bible talks about people overcoming huge odds to fulfill what seemed like overwhelming odds- Noah, Moses, David, Nehemiah, just to name a few.

Most Christians are familiar with these characters, though Nehemiah may escape many. Nehemiah was faced with a challenge when he was called to repair the walls of Judah when they had been destroyed.

This was no ordinary call- God called Nehemiah to restore the wall of Jerusalem. A wall was of the utmost importance to a city in that day. It was not only a symbol of their wealth but obviously a security device, and one which provided a sense of community. To not have a wall caused great embarrassment and heartache, and left the people vulnerable to attack.

Consider your own home if it had no walls. Your life is completely open to all around you to impose their will. A very difficult position to be in to say the least.

Nehemiah petitioned his King, Artaxerxes, to be permitted to leave for a period to accomplish this work. Imagine that for a moment- asking your king to go serve someone else for a while. That would be quite a task in and of itself.

But the challenges came later when Nehemiah arrived in Judah. Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the men of Ashdod heard what the Jews were trying to accomplish and were critical. With the wall, the Jews would be more secure and less vulnerable to their will. This would not do.

The potentially imminent threat of attack forced the Jews to build the wall while maintaining a vigilance against attack from their enemies. The had spears and swords at the ready while laboring in the sun. Building a wall was challenging enough, but to be asked to do so in the heat AND be prepared to fight at a moment's notice as well? The stress must have been insurmountable. If that was not enough, the men also pulled guard duty at night to ensure the city was defended.

With God's help, the wall was completed in only 52 days- far shorter a time than the enemies of Jerusalem had expected, so they KNEW this was God's work and feared it mightily, knowing an attack on the city was an attack on God himself.

Do you think you are any different? Do you think, if you are doing God's work you are any less blessed than the people of Jerusalem? Of course not. Our walls are different today, but they are torn and attacked every day by our enemies. Strengthen YOUR walls by realizing God's will is being done in your life. But the punishment for each was different. The punishment for Eve was lighter than Adam's as Eve was tempted by Satan himself and Adam was tempted by Eve. But I think there may be something more as well. In Genesis 3:8 when the LORD walked in the Garden, he called out to Adam, not Eve, for Adam was the spiritual leader of the couple. His penalty for being enticed by Eve to eat of the forbidden fruit was a life of toil and sweat on his brow. Eve's penalty, though some may argue, was less in the pain of child bearing and a monthly reminder.

The point is since Adam was the spiritual leader of the couple, God sought him for accountability, and since Adam did nothing to rebuke Eve for eating but rather ate as well, his punishment was (and should have been) greater. The same goes for believers. Those who are ministers and preach will be judged most harshly as they should be more in tune with the Word and any err they commit is potentially more profound because of their leadership position. Same with corrupt judges. Those who do not uphold the law will answer to the Lord for their transgressions against their authority.

In light of this, if you are a husband and/or father, are YOU the Spiritual Leader of you Home? If you are not, you better be because come Judgment Day, there are no excuses, only those who did and did not. Deuteronomy 4:9, 10; 6:6, 7; 11:19 talks about the teaching of your children while Ephesians 5:25, 28, 33 talks about how to be the leader of your spouse. One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 5:24, not for the wife to submit to the husband, but because men so often quote that verse and forget the more important 25th verse: Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church andAZ)"> gave himself up for her. In other words, if you have the same love for your wife as Christ did for the church, your wife will want to follow you as her leader.

Think about it. The last time you were in a difficult, perhaps even dangerous situation, you may have thought to yourself I wish there was someone here to tell me what to do. If there had been, what if they did not have YOUR best interest at heart? Would you have followed them? Would you have put yourself in a potentially hazardous position on their behalf? What if it was someone you would do anything for? Your family? Perhaps your partner if you are a cop or firefighter, maybe your battle buddy in the military. There are some bonds stronger than family, but regardless of the relationship, the illustration is the same, and the answer is the same.

You WOULDN'T follow someone who did not have your best interest at heart, but you would put infinite faith in someone whom you care for deeply. Why is that?

Faith. You have more faith in your securing a positive outcome for yourself with someone you trust and care for much more than for someone who do not have a vested interest in your welfare.

Think about the pig and the chicken. If you have bacon and eggs for breakfast, the chicken has an interest, but the pig is fully vested.

Are you fully vested with your spouse and children? Do you build them up and have the love and patience Christ has for you? Probably not, unless you are perfect or someone who is highly unusual (not a bad thing). It is just that we tend to love ourselves more than we love others which makes it so difficult to do.

So how do you do it?

1 day at a time. Pray for wisdom and strength, and for the Holy Spirit to guide you and for the Lord to open your eyes and ears to the needs of your family. Make sure you make time for them and demonstrate how important their happiness is in your life. Before you know it, you will be living for others, and your life will be transformed in ways you cannot believe.

Are your glasses clean?

Perception. It is a funny thing. Given a scenario, any scenario, given to 100 different people, you may well get 100 different interpretations of the same scenario. Take for example the exercise of 30 people sitting next to each other. A moderator whispers something into the ear of the first person and has them whisper it to the next and pass it on until it gets to the last person at the far end. They then tell the moderator what they heard and it usually so far from what was originally spoken it barely resembles the initial story.

Why is that?

I believe the answer is our perception. Our life experiences has prejudiced us in certain manners to perceive what we see, hear, smell and even taste to make it a personal experience and one we can categorize for future reference. Call it the glasses through which you experience life, if you will.

These glasses are the filters we experience most everything, especially new things, through. Because of this, we often become jaded and biased for seemingly baseless reasons. This can make it difficult for other people to understand what we are thinking when we say or do something in response to a given situation. They pass judgement on us based on how THEY would have acted (or more properly, how they THINK they would have acted) and consequently, unwittingly foist their values on the other person, and perhaps never understanding what challenges that person is facing.

The key is to remain free of prejudice by clearing your mind and looking at everyone with clean glasses. There is a reason engineers and scientists pay a lot of money for the best optics when it comes to building a laser or a powerful telescope/microscope. The slightest imperfection, even if unseen by the human eye, can stop a devices' ability to bring objects into clear view. A scope is only as good as the poorest component (lens), and that component becomes the mechanism by which a faint distant star or perhaps a new modality of medical treatment may be discovered. The glass must be of utmost purity, free of defects, scratches or contaminants, no matter the expense.

Why would our eyes, ears, nose and mouth be any different? Our senses far exceed the capabilities of the most powerful computers in the world, and yet we constantly allow contaminants to impair our perception and judgement. Why?

Is it apathy or laziness? Ignorance? Well, for each person, the explanation is different. Some don't care, (apathy), don't want to know any better (laziness) or simply don't know the difference (ignorance). It could be said a fourth reason is stupidity, which, in my opinion is when ignorance is overcome, and the individual refuses to realize the lesson which overcomes ignorance.

I think this may be the very reason we are quick to point out the speck in our neighbor's eye but cannot see the plank in our own Matthew 7:3-5. This passage has always made me try to THINK before I say something. We never know what has happened in someone's life that has gotten them to where they are, and because of that, we must strive to be more Christ-like when interacting with our brothers and sisters. When we can all do that, we will achieve a great victory in mastering ourselves and our faith.

Perhaps more significantly, we will give others less reason to judge us on the same grounds as we have judged them, and in the end be a better witness for Christ. Like a pure prism or lens can let out the true colors of light for us to see individually, a pure heart and mind enables us to see the true colors of our neighbors, free of prejudice.

How clean are your glasses?

Are you wrestling with your faith?

My oldest son Michael is about to wrap up his short wrestling career. He started just 4 years ago and progressed significantly under the direction of a remarkably talented coach at the high school.

During one of his last matches, it occurred to me there is a strong parallel between what we were watching in athletic competition and what we as bleievers go through every day. I watched as one of our kids was really man-handling another wrestler, and by the look on his face, the other boy had no idea what to do to escape.

Truth be told, there was nothing he could have done. Our wrestler was far-too talented and skilled to be beaten unless he made a mistake. It was almost poetry in motion. Every move his opponent made he was already prepared to counter and then attack with a move of his own. It was so unfair I genuinely felt bad for the other boy. It seemed like no matter what he tried, no matter how hard he fought, he was stymied at every turn. There was no one there to help, only a passive judge (the referee) who kept tally of the contest.

I marvelled at the similarity of this competition I was witnessing and wondered if others saw the same symbolism as me. My guess is probably not.

But the good news is that is pretty much where the similarities end! If you are a Christian, you KNOW the Lord is with you (although sometimes we do forget that), and through Him, all things are possible. Have you ever been though? Feeling pinned down, physically exhausted and emotionally drained as you are attacked from seemingly every angle of your life? Why is it seems things go badly all at once? What do you do about it? Do you internalize and bottle everything up, let everyone else know about your difficulty, or pray?

I hope the answer is you pray. Praise Him for all the blessings you have, and for the strenght to weather this storm in His name. Pray to learn what He would have you to learn from this lesson, and to be able to reach out to others and lift them up as well.

This is not easy- when you feel like your boat is being tossed about on the sea and you are about to go under, one of the last things most people think of is reaching out into the cold dark sea to lift another one out of the water when it is all you can do to stay afloat. But that is exactly what God would have you to do!

It is easy to be cheerful and upbeat when everything is going great and your way. Who can't do that? But the real test of character is when things are tough, you are unsure yourself, and you think "I am the only one going through this". You may be the ONLY one going throught EXACTLY your circumstances, but truth is, you will be amazed at how many others who seemingly have it all together are in deeper water than you. All you have to do is ask

Years ago, when my professional career was spiraling out of control, I admired my next door neighbor. Dave was on his game- medical sales, working the phone, setting appointments, closing business and making a great living. I languished in several short-term jobs while he maintained a strong professional life. I was envious because I had been there not long before, and had it all taken away for some reason. I had let it embitter me, and felt how unfair it was to my family.

Then one day Dave shows up on my door step. He had been crying for some time. We sat down in my office and he told me his wife wanted a divorce. Their little boy was about 3 at the time and he was Dave's pride and joy, yet something had terribly gone wrong. His wife was very controlling, and finally things came to a head. I felt so ashamed of the envy I had felt, especially when he shared with me he had envied ME with the close relationship my wife and I enjoyed. I was sick to my stomach. I had lost sight of what was really important, and more to the point, during my distress, I had withdrawn and not been there for a friend of mine until it was too late.

I still struggle with having to carry the burden I have now and volunteering to take on others with my friends, but I force myself to. I am trying to do the same with this blog in the hopes it helps just one person with an "aha" moment.

We must remember when we are wrestling with our challenges, all we need to do is keep our eyes, heart, ears and faith upon Him, and we will become the champions, while witnessing to those around us. So many times I hear someone who was tested in a very difficult situation how they made it through the ordeal and they often say they knew God was with them all the way. It doesn't matter how much bigger your "opponent" is or how much more "skill" they have, for the Lord is your might,

Isn't it comforting knowing no matter what, He still loves you and WILL be there for you? All you have to do is ask.

Be blessed.

How Should I Pray?

One of the many questions I had when I first became a believer is how do I pray to God? What do I pray for? Matthew 6:5-13 answers the question, and tells us how NOT to pray.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him"

By the verse, here is what Jesus is telling us:

Verse 5: We are to pray in secret, not the way people did in His day -- praying out loud publicly, primarily to just be seen, and heard.

Verse 6: Jesus asks us to go to a private place since our Heavenly Father already knows what we are going to pray about.

Verse 7: Jesus tells us not to ramble on and on, as people of other religions do, or be repetitious with words. God, our heavenly Father, would have us be specific about our prayer.

Verse 8: Jesus reiterates that the believer is not to pray repetitiously like the heathen.

But then, He tells us HOW to do it:

Verse 9: Jesus says we should give honor to God and His name.

Verse 10: We are to pray for His Kingdom to come, and for His will to be done, that there would be a heavenly or godly presence here on earth.

Verse 11: We are to pray for daily provision.

Verse 12: We are to pray and ask for forgiveness for our sins, and for others who have wronged us.

Verse 13: We are to pray and ask God to keep us from being tempted, and to deliver us from Satan and his power.

This is where the Lord's Prayer originates from: Our Father who are in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your Kingdom, Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins (trespasses), just as we forgive those who have sinned (trespassed) against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for thine is the kingdom and the glory, forever and ever, Amen.

By reciting the Lord's Prayer, you prepare yourself to commune with God and open your mind and heart to the Holy Spirit so you might better understand the written Word, or to petition God for special requests. Next, thanking Him for your blessings (you have more than you think!) keeps you mindful of how God has provided for your basic needs already.

I always had a hard time imagining the Israelites forgetting what miracles they had seen to deliver them from Pharoah, including manna and water every day except the Sabbath. They had their needs covered every day, yet would follow the wicked in a moment with little hesitation.

Today, we are surrounded my much more wickedness and compelling things to pull us away from God. You must pray for strength and guidance to be a good witness and to be pure of heart.

The prayers you seek must be in your personal life must fit in your purpose. For example, I could pray all day every day to be a professional baseball player, but until I can throw a 95+ mile/hour fastball, I won't be in the majors any time soon. Why not? It is not in God's plan for my life. He has something else in store, so I pray to not miss what He would have me to see and learn.

And it needs to be relevant. Before a game, many players pray to be blessed with a win. I ask "Really?" Do you think God REALLY cares WHO wins this game? I say rather pray to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat so you may be a better witness.

Okay, okay, but when it comes to something real, like a job opportunity, what should I do? What should I pray?

This is difficult as every situation is different, and God frequently speaks very softly (He has not used a burning bush with me and I wish he would because I am a little slow!) so you must listen carefully to what he says. I am challenged by this because if there is a job I think I would do well with and want it, I have to ensure I am not talking myself into it in the guise or direction of God. This can get really tricky.

Don't be afraid to be specific. Pray for a signal. For example, if I am supposed to take this job, I will hear from them by 12:45 tomorrow, for example, and the offer will be for this, this and this, and this person is the one who will contact me. The more specific you become, the less likely it is you will miss the miracle God gives you with whatever you are praying for.

You must pray often, and be patient, for today, the answer maybe "no", "maybe" or "not yet". Remember, His will be done, not mine, and not yours.

And of course, when the blessing comes, all thanks and praise goes to Him.

Do we really worship One God?

One of the main attacks against Christianity is we really worship more than one God. The accusations state we are poly-theistic, or many god-worshipping.

Nothing could be further from the truth, yet it can be difficult to adequately explain in terms non-believers can understand and believe.

Many attempts have been made to equate the three personalities of God (God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit) in more pragmatic terms, like water, ice and steam. While the water molecule remains the same, the principle properties remain the same.

At first glance, this seems like a fair comparison, however, when you consider all three cannot exist at the same time (with the same sample of water), and all phases of water must go through some means of change. Without getting too scientific, the water molecule becomes slightly more displaced in ice than in water (this is what givers ice buoyancy), and very rarified or spaced apart in steam (which is why steam appears like a cloud and lifts up into the atmosphere).

So really, not a great example afterall. What to do?

It occurred to me one day the same question could be posed in every home in the world with a family. Surely, most people do not have 3 distinct men living in a traditional family (husband, wife, children) do they?

Absolutely not. However, there are 3 distinct personalities of a man living in my home.

First, I am my parent's son. This characteristic exhibits certain traits of me and a certain relationship with my parents. This is my first personality because it is the one with which I have the most experience. After all, I was their child first.

Secondly, I am my wife's husband. This is a totally different type of love and commitment than from my parents. Our relationship is much closer and intimate than that of my parents, as it should be. Our love is demonstrated differently, and we have a different love for each other. We would do different things for the other depending on the circumstances. For example, I would give my life for my wife and children, while I would be hard-pressed to do the same for my parents. Not out of selfishness, but because it is the parent's job to protect the child.

Lastly, I am the parent of my children. Again, a different love and different values attached to the relationship I enjoy with my children. The protector, teacher, spiritual leader, provider and foster of the house hold. This form of love is without values or conditions attached. It is unmitigated, unselfish love and a willingness to do anything to help them.

To a greater degree, God is willing to do anything to help US, even sacrificing his own Son for our sins, so His love is even greater than anything you and I can comprehend. All we can do is praise Him, accept the gift for what it is and be prepared to set the record straight when a non-believer accuses us of following more than one God.

You are going to do something great

I had a little difficulty writing this post. I have never shared this with anyone but my wife, and for those of you who know me, you'll understand why.

I am not one to tout myself and toot my own horn. In fact, that is an inherent weakness of mine in the business world as I don't concern myself with telling the boss what I am up to. Rather, I focus on the tasks he gave me and completing them. I abhore the person who is constantly trying to be the center of attention, telling everyone how great they are and what they are doing. Consequently, I do not care for subordinates who do the same, and have no place for them.

This is all about a conversation I had several years ago with a widow, and her comment has haunted me ever since. She was waiting for her vehicle to be finished in the service department, as was I and we started talking about something. What it was I cannot remember, but it was a warm, deep and thought provoking conversation. I do recall her mentioning her husband had died recently, and though she missed him, knew he was in a better place. I remember her face like it was yesterday- thin, middle-aged woman, short short hair with some gray in it. She was a beautiful, elegant lady with an aire of sophistication and perhaps aristocracy.

The bottom line, she was a magnificent lady, and I remember thinking to myself what a shame, at her early age, to have experienced the loss of her beloved husband.

At any rate, something happened that day in our conversation. After a few minutes, and after the discussions became deep and more meaningful, she paused, looking me in the eyes and said "You are going to do something great someday".

I thanked her for her kindness and time, and left. But her words did not sink in until later.

"You are going to do something great someday".

What did she see in me? What did she hear that prompted her to say that to a complete stranger after only a few minutes? At first I was complimented, but it soon turned to a dull echo in my head, sometimes consuming me as I struggled for an answer.

When I was very young, my grandfather took my hands and said "Those are the hands of a ball-player".

As it turned out, that was prophetic. I was gifted in baseball, though my grandpa never had the chance to see me play. I know he would have been proud.

It was in this context that this ladies' words affected me deeply. I had heard it before and it was prophetic, albeit from a relative.

The challenge is, has been and will be to determine what is in store for me, what is God's plan for me. I have had a servant's heart all my life. In fact, when I was 12, I made up my mind I wanted to serve my country as an officer in the military as my father had done, and the only other things that attracted me were similar missions- FBI, fire department, State Police. I hunger to make a difference, and that is something I have missed since I left medical sales. The ability to positively affect people in my profession.

So now what? Am I to run for a public office? Start a charitable organization or support one? Adopt foster children? I don't know, but I pray God to reveal to me what He would have me to do.

What about you? Are you doing God's work? Or are you resisting Him living for yourself and the moment? Nothing is sweeter than being in the blessings of the Lord, knowing you are a good child and faithful servant. In this capacity, you are a powerful witness for God. I pray you are there too.

You have not because you ask not

We were just watching Joel Osteen's message this morning about expecting a flood (#425R - Living Breakthrough Minded) . He said too many of us ask for a trickle or a stream, but few ask for a flood. Too many times we settle for what we have, what we had or what we think we deserve. We have no idea what God has in store for us, and the only way to get there is to pray and ASK for it.

During the message it struck me- I remember how when my children were younger they thought I knew everything, could do anything, could fix anything. I think they would have told you I could have built a nuclear reactor if you had asked them if I could. I remember how proud that would make me feel (even though now they don't think I know how to tie my own shoes!) and what a sense of validation that would give me. That anything they asked me to do I could (and would) do, if I could.

How much greater does God love you than you love your children or parents? How much greater are the blessings he could bestow on you? Knowing He is a jealous God, and He seeks an intimate relation with each of his children , how happy do you think He is when we challenge him to bless us mightily- more so than we dreamed? How proud do you think He is when we ask Him for help, with the faith and innocence my little boys had? Do you think for one second the Father would withhold ANY blessing from you?

Not possible. He wants more for you than you dreamed of. More than you dreamed of asking for.

We have been in this situation. We have been asking for a job to replace what we have lost. I have had many jobs, none of which approach what was taken from us, so recently I decided to start a consulting business to capitalize on my experience over the last several years and leverage it and my relationships to grow a business.

I approached a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago for some financial backing. My business plan is simple, straight forward, and with no overhead save our living expenses, I felt the amount I was asking for would be easy for him to approve and more than adequate for the business' needs.

Rather, I was disappointed when he rejected my plea, saying instead he felt I was thinking too small. He felt I should be seeking some serious start-up capital (the sum makes me queasy), and that would allow me to hit this business hard and grow fast.

The bottom line, as crazy as I think it sounds, I think he was right, and I have redone the plan showing rapid growth and allowing me to bring on several people, a couple of whom have had similar challenges, giving THEM a chance to escape the rat race. (Thank you for your vision and advice George).

I have longed to be able to make a difference in peoples' lives and by thinking big, I will be able to do so sooner, and impact more people than if I just went for what we need.

What is happening in your life, or your families' lives that requires an adjustment in your thinking, in your altitude? Do you need a different perspective? Will it require you to step outside your comfort zone and learn new skills, to push your abilities?

Good! God will not only show you the way, but He will give you the strength, courage and wisdom to make it. He will put people in your path to mentor, assist and guide you. Just ask Him, pray patiently and wait for your answers to appear supernaturally.

Merry Christmas

It is hard to believe, but it is Christmas morning already. 2009 literally FLEW by despite the economic challenges it presented so many people. Perhaps that was a tender mercy.

During this time of year, as the carols are played on the radio, many of the songs speak of the birth of our LORD, and rest of the coming of Jesus Christ to this world.

For me, one song in particular strikes a chord, and seldom fails to cause me to well up thinking about that day so many years ago. I am speaking of The Little Drummer Boy . The version, as we know it, was written in the 1950's and as you are probably already aware, talks to the impoverished conditions in which the King of kings is born- in utter humility.

The thing that strikes me most is the image of the new-born Christ, rosy cheeks, in all His splendor, so innocent and tender, and what his fate is to be, yet He is full of love for all mankind. I think back to the birth of my children and the sense of awe I had at the miracle of birth. Anyone with any spirituality whatsoever whom has witnessed a child's birth has to be moved in the same way. For me, especially with my daughter's birth, I sensed something else- an angelic presence in her eyes and smile. I got the distinct sensation she had just been with God and came to us. It was uncanny and almost palpable; surreal for certain.

But there is more to the story of Jesus' birth.

Today, child birth is relatively predictable. We have hospitals, nurses and doctors, clean environments, and so much information to ensure a healthy baby which begins with gestation. There t.v. shows, magazine articles, websites and even parents sharing tips and notes of what to expect.

Mary and Joseph did not have the benefit of any such advantage. Ostracized as an illegitimate pregnant woman, this woman was barely a teen-ager when she was saddled with the greatest responsibility of anyone in the history of man- to raise the savior and Son of man. Even Joseph I think had some doubts about the conception, but he accepted his role as her husband and when they departed their community with great uncertainty.

With nowhere to go, not even a room in an inn, this young, scared mother and father settled down in a cave with farm animals to give birth. Can you imagine? No idea of what to do, no support, no warm bed, no family, not even the benefit of having visited a doctor, and all with the highest degree of uncertainty: Why me? How am I going to do this? How will we provide for Him?

Questions all new parents face- the doubt and uncertainty, but most at least have communal support if not familial support.

As with any birthday celebration, I hope you will remember who we are celebrating, and not be sucked in by all the hype of commercialism during the holiday. Remember HE is the reason for the season. And don't be afraid to wish someone MERRY CHRISTMAS. It is YOUR faith and your belief. If a "friend" is offended, they weren't your friend in the first place.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Team USA Baseball does a vet right

Here is a feel-good story from the World Baseball Classic that took place after the climactic win by the U.S. over Puerto Rico, Jeff Passan from Yahoo! Sports filed the following report. The link to the story is here: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-perezteamusa031809&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The flag traveled around the world and through the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq. Sgt. Felix Perez brought it from home as a reminder and an amulet. The flag never left his Army backpack.

It accompanied Perez to Dolphin Stadium on Tuesday night. He needed some luck for his team, the United States, in its must-win Baseball Classic game against Puerto Rico. Perez wore a Team USA hat and a Team USA hoodie, and his little sister, Jessica, draped his flag across her shoulders. The United States’ 6-5 come-from-behind victory in the ninth inning sent them into a frenzy. She danced around. He sat in his motorized wheelchair and roared.

On the way out, the 27-year-old Perez placed the flag in his lap and leaned over to a security guard manning Gate G. He was hoping some players from Team USA might sign it. The security guard led Perez and his sister to the U.S. clubhouse, and the flag went inside.

“The next thing I know,” Perez said, “I’m getting called to come back in there.”

And so began the coolest 30 minutes of Felix Perez’s life. On an evening when he felt especially proud to be an American – when a group of his sporting heroes wearing his country’s name across their chests banded together to win a game they had no business winning – Perez found himself surrounded by them, doused with celebratory Miller Lites, with the American flag that was with him during the worst moment of his life passed around the room and signed by every player on the team.

“Everybody,” Perez said.

Then they handed him a ball filled with signatures.

“Everybody,” Perez said.

The half-hour went too fast. Jimmy Rollins, who scored the winning run, wanted to chat more. David Wright, who drove it in, couldn’t hear enough about how the New York Mets are Perez’s favorite team. Almost half the team surrounded Perez for a photograph, the flag draped around his torso, a smile on every face, and none brighter than his.

“I’m just happy to see him happy,” Jessica said.

It’s been four years since Perez returned from the Middle East, where he spent four years. He enlisted after his 17th birthday and was in Afghanistan by the time he turned 20. He doesn’t like to talk about his injury. Some wounds don’t heal.

Perez played ball growing up in North Bergen, N.J., and still loves watching the sport. He attended Team USA’s first WBC game here, an 11-1 mercy-rule loss to Puerto Rico. When the Americans beat the Netherlands to stay alive, Perez woke up at 9 the next morning, called the box office and bought three tickets.

The stadium, practically empty at first pitch, filled to 13,224 by game’s end. It deserved more eyes. Puerto Rico scored in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and tacked on an insurance run in the ninth for a two-run lead. The Americans, about to get bumped from the second straight WBC before the semifinals, needed something divine. Shane Victorino singled to right field. Brian Roberts singled to center. And then Roberts, who had joined Team USA just two days earlier to replace the injured Dustin Pedroia, stole second base – even though coaches laid down the hold sign. Roberts hadn’t quite learned the signs yet.

A walk to Rollins, and another to Kevin Youkilis, and the U.S. had cut the deficit to one run. Wright laced a 2-1 pitch from Fernando Cabrera down the right-field line, and out charged all of Team USA, from the bench and the bullpen, in a bull rush to home plate, then to greet Wright. His teammates kept pushing Wright, joyous and unbridled shoves, until he fell down and they buried his face in the dirt.

“I never thought that we’d be dog piling in March,” Wright said.

No one did. The malaise that clouded the previous games involving Team USA seemed infectious. For every Felix Perez, there were dozens, sometimes hundreds, of fans rooting for the opposing team. Every WBC game thus far, even the ones in Florida, felt like it was on the road.
Not even that dampened the Americans’ enthusiasm. They play Venezuela on Wednesday to determine seeding in Los Angeles, where they’ll face either Korea or the winner of Wednesday’s Japan-Cuba knockout game – and perhaps with a few more supporters who can appreciate what Team USA accomplished Tuesday.

“That was the greatest game I’ve ever been a part of,” catcher Brian McCann said. “Ever.”
Same went for Perez. He said he would rather Team USA win the WBC than the Mets win a World Series.

“We’re the U.S.,” Perez said. “This is our game. … This is the world. You’re representing your country. What is more honorable than representing your country?”

Team USA’s manager, Davey Johnson, grew up an Army brat, his father a prisoner-of-war in World War II.

“There is nothing more honorable,” he said.

Wright was raised near Naval Station Norfolk, one of the largest military bases in the country.

“When you see those guys and get a chance to see how much it means to them, that makes it extra special,” he said. “They take a lot of pride in that red, white and blue, and to have USA across your chest and have supporters like that – that’s what this tournament means.”

Outside the clubhouse, Perez started moving toward the stadium exit. His dad, Felix, had called. He was wondering where Perez and Jessica had gone. They were headed back to the car, Jessica said. They had a pretty amazing souvenir.

A minute later, Rollins walked by and spotted Perez.

“All right, baby,” he said. “Keep a smile on your face.”

“Hey,” Perez said, “as long as you keep swinging the bat, I’ll be happy.”

Perez lifted his right arm as high as he could to wave goodbye. He wasn’t sure he’d see these guys again. He said he might fly to Los Angeles for the finals. He doesn’t know.

Perez moved his hands onto the flag. It’s a struggle, but he wanted to touch his prize. He plans on hanging it next to his other American flag, the one his friends in the 82nd Airborne sent to him when he was injured.

The old flag’s traveling days are over. Sgt. Felix Perez brought it to his home Tuesday night as a reminder and an amulet. Why? Why is this such a surprise when we take God and prayer out of school? Why is this such a surprise when we put condoms in school and teach birth control vs. abstinence? Why is this such a surprise when we fawn over Jamie Spears for having a child out of wedlock, and are constantly exposed to sex in everything from gym socks to cigarettes during prime time t.v.?

Yeah- its a real mystery to me too! Some startling facts:

On average, girls are losing their virginity at 15 years of age.

14 percent of teens who are having sex say they’re doing it at school.

52 percent of survey respondents say they do not use protection when having sex.

One in three says she fears having a sexually transmitted disease.

24 percent of teens with STDs say they still have unprotected sex.

One in five girls says she wants to be a teen mom.

About 50 percent acknowledge that they’ve hit someone.

One out of three teens has tried drugs.

What say you? Are you tired of our children being exploited and exposed to the worst we have to offer? Is it any wonder the Muslims find us and our entertainment habits reprehensible? We pipe this garbage onto the airwaves make celebrities out of people who were not able to finish their education because they were called to acting or whatever lame excuse they use for not finishing their education.

One in 5 girls wants to be a mom. Wow. If they had any clue how much it takes to be a MOTHER, they would run for the hills. But again, we are lauding Jamie Spears for her pregnancy and showing it CAN work. Yeah- if you are wealthy and can afford a nanny! But that isn't real life! Most of us know how difficult it is when someone is TOTALLY dependent on you for survival. I think if we were to take away the mobile phones of these wanna be mommies and ensure they stay home Friday and Saturday nights for a while, the novelty would wear off. Perhaps we should look at it as at least 1 in 5 is not wanting to get pregnant to have an abortion.

I am all for freedom. In fact, if I think might want to watch something of poor moral character, I should have the right to make that decision. But I should also have the right to ensure my children are exposed to the proper influences while they are at school, and in my opinion, there is no better influence than that of God, and for making people accountable for their decisions.

Life's Lessons

"Experience is the hardest teacher. Perhaps the challenges are even greater today than previously. With the proliferation of the Internet and information sharing, more and more people are connected and yet disconnected at the same time. More information is shared and forgotten more quickly than ever

Ken McCown photograph: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kenmccown

before. Workers and managers alike are faced with an ever-increasing complexity of information sources and media outlets that we are approaching information overload. Kids today are not happy unless they are playing a game online with their XBox, listening to music or a video on their iPod while texting a friend with the t.v. on in the background. Their minds are constantly engaged with information they process. Perhaps they will never know or appreciate the tranquility my parents' generation knows. Our lives progressively grow more complicated and stressful, yet we want more technology to help us DO MORE (keep up) so we can stay on top of everything.

I digress in an attempt to paint a brief scenario of what our generation has been raised on. They have not faced the challenges or sacrifices our parents and grand parents did during the huge personal crises that were raised from the conflicts of man or the collapse of an economy. But their challenges are just as real. When the stock market collapsed in 1929, there was not awidespread loss around the world as we recently saw with the "financial crisis" on Wall Street in October. Militarily, we are in more theaters of conflict than WWII, and face more enemies than at any time in our history. The enemy is faceless, the battlefield is not readily defined with neat lines drawn on a map in a general's office. The threat can be virtual in an assault on servers or even our financial network as we experienced recently with 9/11 and now the credit crisis.

The point is, in all these instances, there are many lessons, and it is frustratingly apparent we may learn from our lessons, but we don't seem to REMEMBER them! Right after 9-11, Senators sang God Bless America, and with righteous indignation demanded the parties responsible be brought to justice. Within a few short weeks, it was partisan politics as usual. Sniping the President about the war on terror after many of the snipers voted for military action. And now that we are in it, they are wanting to cut and run for political expediency crying "We can't win. There is no hope. The extra troops won't make a difference. They are wanting to come home." Remember some of those comments? They seem pathetic with what has transpired in the last few months.
Iraqis now control most of Iraq, oil is flowing, their budget is bursting at the seams, the infrastructure is gaining strength every day. The surge did work. Senator McCain and the others supporting the surge now look like geniuses. They will simply tell you they listened to the experts- the guys on the ground.
Why is this so hard? We took the test and passed it, however painful it may have been. We have since gathered our lessons, and have tried to learn from them. I just hope we don't forget those lessons, but every day, I fear we grow more and more complacent.

Tolerance

When I think of tolerance, I often think of a mother bear or lion with her cubs as they gnaw on her while she is trying to rest. I also think of my mom when she tolerated all the idiotic things I did as a kid (or my wife tolerating the stupid things I do NOW!). I also think of this great country, one of great tolerance for the so many different cultures that has made us great. This is why so many people defect to the U.S. seeking political asylum, because WE ARE tolerant. Where else can you say you think the President is a liar and should be impeached, or if you want, you can gather a group of people in a park and talk about a religion freely, or even burn a U.S. flag without fear of persecution.

Tolerance is a bantied-about term these days, and I fear our younger generations do not adequately understand what the word truly means. According thefreedictionary.com, tolerance is defined as:

1. The capacity for or the practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others.
a. Leeway for variation from a standard.
b. The permissible deviation from a specified value of a structural dimension, often expressed as a percent.
2. The capacity to endure hardship or pain.
3. Medicine
a. Physiological resistance to a poison.
b. The capacity to absorb a drug continuously or in large doses without adverse effect; diminution in the response to a drug after prolonged use.
4.
a. Acceptance of a tissue graft or transplant without immunological rejection.
b. Unresponsiveness to an antigen that normally produces an immunological reaction.
5. The ability of an organism to resist or survive infection by a parasitic or pathogenic organism.

- source- http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

It seems today another definition is being used, and that is for endorsement or support. It is widely established if you have a particular viewpoint, and you are not "open" to another point of view, (i.e., you are convicted in your own beliefs and cannot be swayed to support another viewpoint) you are labeled intolerant.

Christians are the best example of this. "Fundamental" Christians are those who believe in the Bible- that what it reads is what God intends. Fundamental too is thrown around a little haphazardly as derogatory remark (consider fundamental Muslims, for example). At any rate, Christians have particularly predictable viewpoints (for the most part) on certain aspects of life and culture.

Not surprisingly, some of the more controversial viewpoints Christians are intolerant of are a woman's choice, gay marriage, other religions, particularly Islam, and indecency on the airwaves. It strikes me as odd how ANYONE can label an American Christian as intolerant. America, after all, is the nation of tolerance. We were founded by religious people looking for freedom, and consequently created a nation (under God), which permits EVERYONE to practice the religion of their choice, as long as no one is harmed. In the military, provisions are made for all denominations, including Druids, Satanists, Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Catholics just to name a few.

Wait a minute- Satanists? That's right. As an American service man or woman, you can pursue your spirituality with Satanism if you so choose. How is that intolerant? Because we don't believe in Satanism or Islam, we are intolerant. Hmmmm. Judgmental? Perhaps. Intolerant? Absolutely not.

Don't get me wrong- I wish they would find the same joy in Christ that I know, but I will not lobby for cessation of their right to practice freedom of religion.

And what about gay marriage? Are you for it? Against it? I am 100% against it! Not to be mean, but rather because it is Holy Matrimony (before God) and His instructions are marriage is between a man and a woman. Period, end of story. Do I feel gay people should be afforded similar institutions to facilitate health care, survivorship benefits, etc? Absolutely! Just don't call it marriage. Marriage is an institution which has been severely damaged over the last few years as divorces spiral out of control (it seems they have stopped growing for now), and any more assaults on an institutions I revere so highly is very problematic me. To allow just anyone to be "married" denigrates the vows I took in front of God, to my wife, and I have held fast to them. Do not destroy my institution- I love it, I want it to stay the way it is.

And for a woman's right to choose, I say absolutely! A woman SHOULD have the right to choose. She has the right to choose to have a relationship. She has the right to choose to have an intimate relationship. She has the right to have premarital intercourse. She has the right to choose to use contraception or not. She has the right to choose to keep a baby or give it up for adoption. See? Choices abound in a pro-life environment! What is so bad about that? I speak from personal experience- my biological mother was in her teens in th 60's in an affluent neighborhood outside Seattle. You think there wasn't some talk about abortion to ease any familial embarrassment? I bet there was, and I am thankful it did not come to that. Did you know there 40,000,000 fewer people alive today because of abortions? That is incredible. If there was a political force responsible for less than 1% of that figure, the U.N. would be screaming for sanctions, the U.S. would probably be stepping in, nations would be wringing their hands for the genocide, it would be a mess.

Why then are our defenseless infants euthanized for convenience, then? Why is that okay? When is it NOT okay to abort a baby? 2nd trimester? 2 weeks premature? 3-4 years post-partum? Where can we as human beings draw the line for God's work?

We can't, and any attempts to do so will be answered to some day, and that is a frightening thought.

Did you know a woman in her 20's who has an abortion is only 150% more likely to have breast cancer? That's not bad! Pretty good odds if you don't like living. Perhaps that is God giving back to the person capable of have her own flesh and blood torn out of her body. We may never know. All I want to know is why Planned Parenthood, NARAL and the other feminist activists won't let this and other dread secrets about abortions' health impacts on women. (I DO know why- its big business).

With discussions on the air like the right to kill a baby and have extramarital affairs and any other form of debauchery our society is starting to lower itself to, it is no wonder our enemies like the Islamic terrorists CAN hate us. We are apparently not convicted of our spiritual beliefs (we woul fight more fervently if we were), we allow our women to parade around in sexy clothing (their argument, not mine), we drink and eat excessively, and many other almost hedonistic acts give them plenty of reason to dislike us.

Yet we permit them to live here as they please, looking down on us for our lifestyle, putting their proverbial thumb in the eye of our great nation, burning our flag, blowing things up, etc. And WE are intolerant. We are intolerant of illegal aliens in our country, but every sovereign nation I can think of would lock someone up for being in the country illegally, but if we do it, it is racist, a hate crime, and we are intolerant.

If that is your definition, so be it! I'll be intolerant until the day I die if it means I stick to my scruples and not lose my convictions. They are who I am. If I was to abandon them, how would I explain it to my children that what I believed in all my life really doesn't mean anything. The things I have stood for and fought for are meaningless?

Teaching tolerance is the aim of http://www.tolerance.org. It all seems innocuous enough- who can say no to educating children about right and wrong when it comes to harrassing people or using labels? Funny, labels are being put on more people than I can recall in many years- ADHD, dyslexic, ADD, PTSD, I mean there are so many syndromes and conditions, who or WHAT is normal any more? This is how it all starts, and one lesson leads to another, and the next thing you know, your child thinks you are innensitive or intolerant of other people and you are wondering where this came from.

I remember having a discussion with my father when I was in 3rd grade in the 70's. In a VERY small town, one of our teachers was pregnant out of wedlock. Mom and dad and several other parents were vocally opposed to her teaching. I couldn't understand why, and naturally asked why it was so wrong. "Because you don't understand what is wrong with it."

What? That's circular reasoning, kind of like pigs don't know pigs stink. I of course now do understand the maxim he was trying to illustrate to me without illustrating it to me, and I am glad he did. Would I fight the same fight for my children? I hope so, children out of wedlock is so readily accepted, I am not sure it would do any good.

What is your definition of tolerance? Is it like mine where everyone is invited to be themselves as long as they do not attempt to foist their beliefs/lifestyles upon you? Or, is is it more vogue in that if you are of differing opinion you are intolerant?

Let's hear from you!

Why do we face trials?

The economy has been hard on all of us- some more than others. Well, let me rephrase that: The public's perception of the economy has been hard on us. I say that because really, our economy WAS doing fine, even though gas has shot through the roof. But now, we have a pandemic of banks failing after they backed shaky loans on A.R.M. loans people should not have bought into. This and other factors has caused a ripple effect which has now had a dramatic impact in nearly all aspects of our (and the world's) economy. These factors have impacted everyone in the United States for the most part in a negative way. People stressed to their limits from budgetary concerns were exacerbated by the compounding effects of the recent (non) crisis.

Our problems pale in comparison to these facts and the current situation with so many of our neighbors from Houston are just recently returned to their homes 10 days after Hurricane Ike hit SE Texas, taking everything from some people.

When we do face a trial, we are quick to ask "Why me? What did I do to deserve this? Why has God forsaken me?"

Well, the real question might better be "Why NOT me?" Sometimes we bring things upon ourselves, and other times we are being tested. How can you tell the difference? Sometimes, you can't. Only with prayer and meditation can some of these answers be had. One day a few years ago, as I was driving 1 1/2 hours to an account, it suddenly hit me: We all have a cross to bear in our lives; some are bigger than others. For some it is financial, for others it is health, fidelity, or maybe job security, or any combination thereof. During these times, we may think we are the only ones experiencing what we are going through at the time, but truth be told, many others have been there before, and many more will be there after, but most importantly, many are going through the same thing you are at the same time.

You have not been singled out. Remember Job was tested for his faith in God, and lost EVERYTHING because of a wager made by Satan. Job, like the rest of us, asked why many times, and still proved his faith by not losing sight of what was first in his life- his realtionship and communion with God.

During the sermon last Sunday, Pastor Ron talked about why trials happen. While I had never verbalized why, the reasons he listed I felt were dead on:

Suffering develops maturity of faith (like fire tempers and strengthens steel) James 1:2-4

Suffering helps us identify with Christ (which is why he suffered, so he could identify with US) Phillipians 1:29

Suffering proves we are God's children Hebrews 12:7-8

Suffering helps us become holy Hebrews 12:10

Suffering produces righteousness & peace Hebrews 12:11

Suffering can lead to godliness Hebrews 12:24-25

Suffering allows us to minister to others in a personal way 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

www.rockpointechurch.org/

When Ron was speaking about these reasons for trials, he also gave us some startling facts:

Since Christ's death 2,000 years ago, 43 million believers have been martyred, over 50% of which have been in the last 100 years.

200 million Christians face persecution daily around the world.

300 Christians die daily for their beliefs

                                                                                                                                                             - Source: World Evangelical Encyclopedia www.persecution.com

Now what I am facing pales in comparison to this persecution, and I would believe our neighbors in Houston would, for the most part, agree their problems are pretty trivial compared to what some of our Christian brothers and sisters are facing.

My wife and I grew up together. That is to say, we started dating when we were 16, so we have been through a lot together. From the difficulties of being a soldier deployed, the pain of the separation to the anxiety of transitioning from the military to the civilian sector, buying a home, having children and professional downturns, we have run through many trials, and our marriage has only gotten stronger. Not because we are so devout and such great Christians, but because we comfort and strengthen each other in times of need. When I am feeling weak, she bolsters my confidence when I need it most, and vice versa. The only thing I wish I could change is the hardship she and my children have experienced for it has been difficult at times. (We have gotten a lot of love, prayers and support from dear friends and the church as well!)

I look back on those periods with a certain degree of pride AND humility- we weathered the storms with our faith, but would not have been able to do it alone. Without His strength, grace and love, we would have faltered long ago; but we are stronger for it, and I think we have a lot more character because of these trials. I wouldn't trade them for anything, for I am proud to carry my cross as a child of God.

I have also noticed during the hardships, the more we take our eye off the "problem" and keep our eyes on God, the easier the hardship becomes. When I pray and commune with God, I find it much easier to deal with the storm, and thereby become more holy (if you will), more spiritual, more understanding. And because we are more understanding after a trial, we can identify with others going through their hardships, and relate more and provide greater love and support in their hour of need.

Please share with us some of your experiences in which you faced a trial and your faith saw you through it!

Helping a brother fall

Today I learned of a situation involving someone I thought a lot of who had contributed knowingly to the fall of a brother.

John, a sales manager at a dealership where I got my start in the car business, is a young, bright and energetic, and doggedly loyal man. I thought a lot of him as he trained me to become self-sufficient in a very short period of time, and helped me get promoted to increased levels of responsibility and pay.

I have had a place in my heart for that young man, but today, I am afraid that may have changed. It seems another manager at the store, we'll call him Mike, had a gambling problem- a big one. Mike would bet on baseball games, for example, not only the winner, but the over/under, just about anything you can think of. And these weren't nickel and dime bets. These were $500/bet, so think $1,000-1,500 per game. He started by texting the bets to John who would place them with his bookie. As it turned out, Mike was not very good at betting. He lost. He lost a lot.

He also had another bad habit. Drinking. I know, it is hard to imagine a car sales professional that drinks, but he does. And when he does, like most other people that drink, he loses his inhibitions, and starts placing more bets. Crazier bets.

John, being the savvy business person he is, saw an opportunity. He started to cover Mike's bets. Then, he started sending one of the guys to the liquor store in the evening to pick up some alcohol, attempting to get Mike to open up more bad bets, suckering him in, if you will. And it worked.

In no time, Mike had run up over $25,000 in lost bets to the bookie, and more to John. See the problem yet?

It apparently got to the point where Mike was cashing in bonds for the money, still pursuing the elation of the elusive win. Again, Mike was not very good at the betting thing. In fact, he would probably have been better off betting against what his inclinations were (a reverse bet, if you will) since he lost so much. Better still, he would be better off altogether to give up both drinking and gambling.

To say I was disappointed in John would be an understatement. I was deeply saddened, in fact, disgusted that he would facilitate someone's fall like he did. Perhaps it is because I am a naive optimist, hoping and seeing the best in people, when in fact, too often the dark, ugly side is shown to our fellow man. What he did is akin to drinking in front of a recovering alcoholic, eating chocolate cake in front of an obese person trying to lose weight, or, well, you get the picture. It was bad enough to carry the bets himself, but to provide the liquor to loosen up his "mark" makes this even more reprehensible.

Because of his age (mid-20's), I know exactly what he would have said had I challenged him (and I would have if we were still working together). His response would have been something like: "I might as well take his money if he is going to throw it away." I can understand that, but it certainly is not right even in that light. People rob, steal, murder, etc., all the time, but it would be no less evil for you or me to commit any of a number of egregious sins.

Mitigating circumstances aside (if there could possible be any), his best course of action, from a fellowship standpoint, would have to be to have not offered to be the facilitator.

What are your thoughts? Have you ever had an experience in which you or someone you knew entered into a moral dilemma? I would love to hear from you.
